Surface treatment technology: "What is the low friction property of fluororesin PTFE?"
Why does fluoropolymer have a low coefficient of friction? We will introduce the low friction properties of fluoropolymer PTFE.
■What is Friction Friction occurs when two objects come into contact and move against each other, generating resistance on their surfaces. The force that arises during this process, which acts as a hindrance, is called frictional force. There are two types of friction: static friction and kinetic friction. The resistance force that acts until the objects start moving is called static friction, while the resistance force that acts after they start moving is called kinetic friction. ■Characteristics of PTFE Fluoropolymer PTFE has an exceptionally low resistance due to friction compared to other resins. The static friction coefficient of PTFE is about 0.04, allowing it to move two objects in contact with a small force. ■Low Friction Properties of Fluoropolymer (PTFE) Fluoropolymer (PTFE) has a low friction coefficient and is also used as a solid lubricant. PTFE has a structure where fluorine atoms tightly surround carbon atoms. The free energy of the fluorine atoms on the molecular surface is low, and the molecules exhibit extremely low polarity in their structural characteristics. This molecular structure is believed to influence the low friction coefficient of PTFE. ■Reasons for the Low Friction Coefficient of Fluoropolymer PTFE → Please check the basic information section for more details.
basic information
■Reasons for the low friction coefficient of fluoropolymer PTFE - The strong atomic bonds within PTFE molecules reduce the intermolecular forces with the molecules of the contacting material. - Friction (sliding) causes PTFE molecules to adhere slightly to the contacting material, resulting in sliding between PTFE molecules. - The surface of PTFE molecules has a smooth structure with minimal irregularities. - The orientation of PTFE molecules makes it easier to alleviate frictional resistance. For these reasons, fluoropolymer PTFE is considered to have excellent lubricating properties. ■Low-friction coating using fluoropolymer coating Fluoropolymers can be coated onto surfaces such as metals to create a film. By applying a fluoropolymer coating, the characteristics of fluoropolymers can be utilized in components and equipment, making products easier to slide and providing lubrication to parts of devices, which is expected to improve productivity and prevent process troubles. *For more details, please download the PDF and check.
