【Process Analysis Instrument Technical Documentation】Measurement of Nickel & Hypophosphite in Plating Bath
Online analysis of nickel concentration and hypophosphorous acid content in a non-electrolytic nickel plating bath!
Pure nickel is a silvery-white metal that is very hard, corrosion-resistant, and ductile. Due to these remarkable properties, nickel is used in many applications, primarily in coatings and surface engineering. Electroless nickel plating is a self-catalyzing chemical technique for depositing a layer of nickel-phosphorus alloy onto the surface of a workpiece. This method relies on the concentration of a reducing agent (sodium hypophosphite) that reacts with metal ions for plating. However, since the lifespan of the chemicals in the plating bath is limited, automatically monitoring the consumption of these chemicals becomes an important process control requirement. Prolonged use of the plating bath leads to an overload of reaction products in the electrolyte, adversely affecting the properties of the workpiece's surface and the layer. This process application note proposes a method for regularly monitoring various active bath components in the electroless nickel plating bath to ensure the uniform deposition of nickel-phosphorus alloy layers.
