Assembly and calibration using PI positioning technology: James Webb Space Telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) utilized PI's positioning technology for assembly and calibration. The primary mirror consists of 18 hexagonal mirror segments, and achieving optical integration of each segment requires micron to sub-micron level six degrees of freedom positioning accuracy and high reproducibility. In the assembly process, a robotic arm equipped with PI's hexapod enabled fine movement and attitude control of the mirror segments, allowing for high-precision placement and fixation in conjunction with laser measurements. During thermal deformation evaluation under low temperature and high vacuum conditions, a custom H-850 hexapod with an interferometer supported precise measurement of mirror behavior and high-precision alignment of the interferometer during cooling from room temperature to cryogenic temperatures. Furthermore, in the calibration tests for NIRSpec, a PI linear axis designed using Dispal material provided stable operation and high-precision movement in a 77 K environment.
