PFA coating for stirring blades | Improved corrosion resistance and prevention of wetting
"Coating up to the welded and edge areas" completely protects against strong acids and strong alkalis! With excellent non-stick properties, it prevents material adhesion and facilitates smooth cleaning between batches and changeovers.
This is a technical case study on a metal stirring blade used in the process of mixing and kneading various chemical agents and solutions, which has been coated with a fluoropolymer PFA that combines excellent corrosion resistance and non-stick properties. Even for complex shapes such as the edge of the blade, shaft joints, and welds, which are prone to stress and thickness variation, a high-performance coating with a uniform thickness free of pinholes is formed. **Main Improvement Effects from Implementation** - **Prevention of Metal Corrosion and Metal Ion Leaching by Chemical Solutions** The metal substrate is completely covered with a PFA film that has excellent chemical resistance. It prevents corrosion from strong acids, strong alkalis, and organic solvents, blocking the leaching of metal components (contamination) and maintaining the purity of the solutions. - **Suppression of Material Adhesion and Sticking to the Stirring Blade** With excellent non-stick, water-repellent, and oil-repellent properties, it prevents the sticking of materials and precipitates that occur during stirring or liquid level fluctuations. This significantly reduces the decrease in stirring efficiency and material loss due to deposits. - **Improved Cleanability for Efficient Color Change and Variety Switching** Since contaminants can be easily removed, cleaning time between batches is greatly reduced. This lowers the contamination risk in multi-product production lines and supports smooth transitions.

Applications/Examples of results
**Main Application Areas and Equipment** ■ Chemicals and Fine Chemicals Stirrers for reaction vessels and blending tanks, mixing and dispersion lines for high-viscosity liquids and paints ■ Semiconductors, LCDs, and Battery Materials Blending tanks for etching solutions and high-purity chemicals, stirring units for slurry used in secondary batteries ■ Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Manufacturing Synthesis and decomposition tanks for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), blending kettles for cosmetic emulsions **Case Studies for Problem Solving** ■ Issue In a reaction vessel mixing strongly acidic chemicals, liquid was infiltrating from the welded joints and edges of the metal stirring blades, leading to localized corrosion. Metal components were leaching into the chemical solution, causing product defects. Additionally, significant time and solvents were spent cleaning high-viscosity materials adhered to the stirring blades after each batch, creating a bottleneck for product changeovers. ■ After Implementation PFA coating was applied to the entire stirring blades and the liquid contact areas of the shaft. ■ Effects and Results - The pinhole-free film completely prevented metal leaching, achieving high quality of the chemical solution. - Adhered materials could now be easily removed with water rinsing or minimal solvent cleaning, significantly reducing cleaning time between batches.

Nikken Coating Industry Co., Ltd. has been a specialized manufacturer of functional coatings for contract processing, earning the trust of customers across various industries for 79 years since its founding. We leverage our processing technology to maximize the properties of fluororesins, such as non-stick, lubricity, and chemical resistance, providing high-performance coatings that directly address customer challenges, including "Thermo Pro Release" for thermal welding processes and "NonStick STC" for blades and precision molds. In recent years, in response to movements regarding regulations on fluorinated compounds (PFAS), "PEEK resin," which is gaining attention as a substitute for fluororesins, has become a focus. Nikken Coating Industry commercialized the world's first PEEK resin coating, "PEEKCOAT," in 1999. Based on the solid knowledge and know-how accumulated over more than 20 years, we are further intensifying our research and development efforts to explore the potential of next-generation PEEK coatings! We aim to be recognized as "the go-to for PEEK coatings" and will continue to lead the way. As "the best partner for functional coatings that builds trust through technology," Nikken Coating Industry will continue to contribute to the creation of high-quality, high-performance products.
