Ion Chromatography Method
Ion chromatography is a method for detecting ionic components in liquid samples.
basic information
Ion chromatography (IC) is classified as a type of liquid chromatography method (Table 1) and is a technique used to detect ionic components in liquid samples. The liquid sample is introduced into a mobile phase called the eluent, and the ionic components in the sample are separated within a separation column, which serves as the stationary phase. There are mainly three types of separation mechanisms in ion chromatography (Table 2), among which ion exchange separation is the most commonly used. Ion exchange separation is a method that separates each ionic component based on differences in valence and ionic radius of the target ionic components. Detectors used include conductivity detectors, electrochemical detectors, UV detectors, fluorescence detectors, and mass spectrometers. Since the retention time of each ionic component separated in the column differs, qualitative analysis can be performed by comparing the peak positions (retention times) with those of standard samples. Additionally, because there is a proportional relationship between the measurement intensity and the concentration of ionic components in the solution, quantitative analysis of ionic components is possible by comparing with standard solutions of known concentration.
